Belt-Driven Variable-Ratio Electric Power-Assisted Rack-and-Pinion Steering (EPS)

Belt-driven Electric Power Steering (EPS) uses a high-output electric motor to increase the torque available for steering assist. This high capacity is essential for delivering faster steering response. The EPS system’s variable gear ratio system is designed and tuned to provide:

  • Instantaneous response
  • Smooth and natural, direct and precise steering feel
  • Agile low-speed maneuverability for city streets and parking
  • High-speed stability and predictability for highway travel
  • Quiet operation

The system’s variable steering ratio is enabled by a steering rack with progressively wider gear-tooth spacing, so as the steering wheel is turned further off center, the steering ratio is quickened. The electric steering system’s ECU is calibrated with the Integrated Dynamics System to adjust steering weight based on the driving mode selected.
